Chapter 29: Battle for WinterHaven
With Winter comes Spring, With War come Spoils, With Ends come Beginings

Characters: Cid, Scathe, Fayde, Basta, Darrow
Game Date: 08/01/12
WinterHaven; Karrnath
Aryth 4, 998YK

Plot Overview:

  • Scene opens with the team crouched down behind a ridge that is overlooking a wide open plane about 3 days march from WinterHaven. Below them is a scene that brings both fury and fear to their souls.
  • An army about 5000 strong is laid out in the field below readying for war. The banners of Lord Francis and the Emerald Claw fly in the wind.
  • While discussions of  asneak attack by the team were discussed it was voted down due to the overwhelming numbers.
  • A Drake on patrol notices the group and heads in the investigate
  • Darrow being the hunter and naturally the ionly one to fail his stealth check decides to full on pray to - (God of the Hunt) - and confronts the Drake as a wandering hunter. This succeeds and the Drake, bored with his job and not interested in a puny half elf hunter, carries on.
  • The Team ride hard to WinterHaven to ready the town as best they can for the coming Onslaught.
  • The team each breaks upon their enterance to the town to head to each of their respective contacts and do what they can to get help.
  • Cid uses House Sivis to contact the Speaker of the Silver Flame for Support in return for the team’s help. He also drops a line to King Kiaus III to let him know whats happening and see if he can lend a hand.
  • Fayde starts to rally the civilians into a more organized militia along with Sgt Jacobs Troops
  • Basta dives into his book remembering something at the mansion that allowed the control of the lava/magma flow.
  • Scathe heads off to Uncle Yari at the ddocks and convinces him to not just stand by and play it safe, to instead fight along with them in the best way his guild knows how…sneaky like. He convinces them to infiltrate the enemy army and spread  discourse and the odd food  poisoning to slow them down from the inside.
  • Darrow convenes with Rorsa and her  wolf pack and gets her to gather some of the mystical and more intelligent creatures in the forest to fight along with them.
  • The idea is found that if they take out the bridge a day away that is the only major crossing for the army to use it should buy them few more days.
  • They go to the bridge and set up a trap on it so that when the army starts to cross it will blow. Being Spring, the water is high and fording the river would be difficult, building a bridge will take time, its a good solid pllan.
  • Lord Francis agreed it would be and had an advanced squad of Trolls and Shockcats, ready to defend the bridge should he need to.
  • They won the fight for the bridge and managed to Arm it. Reports came in that it had worked and buys them a couple days.
  • The next two days are filled with training the troops, activating a lava moat that will at least protect the front of the city and keeping eveyone focused on the plan despite the overwhlming odds the mood was high and the city seemed to forget any prejudices it ever had. They were united as one against a force that was coming for them.
  • On the fourth day they come out of the Colour Animal Inn from one of their War Council Meetings a little discouraged. Lord Francis was two days away from completeing their new bridge, and therefore only three days away from the city. It was not boding well for WinterHaven. As they stepped out into the daylight they notice a large dark shadow blacken out the sun. The Alarm sounds and they begin to scramble the troops, then they notice the 5 Airships flying to dock at the Tower, they are flying the flags of the Silver Flame, The Houses Orion, Cannith and Lyrandar, and the flag of Breland.
  • Captain Guntar of House Lyrandar approaches them and offers his support on “loan” from the three Houses you have helped a few times and used very little, he also informs you of his surprise guests he has brought along: Lord Fargo approaches with a smile and offers you his “private security force” as help; Bishop Xavier of the Silver Flame walks forward with a smile and grasps Cid in a tight hug and offers The Speakers thanks and troops to help; And Veln, the Prophecier walks forward and solomnlly greets them all and says he needs to speak with the five alone.
  • Veln takes them all to a private room and starts to talk about the prophecy. As he does the room goes dark and sigils and runes starts to flow and weave in colours throughout the room. His voice starts to echo through the room as if to consume everything, when he finishes speaking the candles flare back up and the deafening silence that encompassed the room dissipates. Veln explains that this battle is the one he is certain begins the prophecy, that everything up to this point was training and set up. That it was all leading to now.
  • He warns of the challenges to come and that he would be only an observer from here on, that he would help as he could, yet the PCs made him realize manipulating the prophecy is sometimes more dangerous than letting it happen as he was too close to pushing you away.
  • The increased support in the town has raised Moral and all is as ready as it can be when the army of Lord Francis and Emerald Claw arrive.
  • A few days later, on Aryth 11, 998YK, the day 2 years ago that the Treaty of Trhonehold was signed officially ending The Last War, The Army of Lord Francis and his Emerald Claw Allies Arrive and Prep on the North field that rolls up to the City.
  • Though it is winter and the snow it blowing; between the spells cast by the enemy troops and the Magma moat flowing in front of the city the air is unseasonably warm.
  • The battle is truely epic and losses are felt on both sides.
  • Even Franklin takes part on one of the safe rampart towers watching the East Main gate of the city for any sneak attacks.
  • As the day battles on the WinterHaven defenders are winning the day. Then the final wave comes in and stops on the field. It pushes through any of the remaining skirmishes on the field cutting down anyone who steps in their path, reguardless of the side they fight for. It is Lord Francis. He calls out the heroes directly to face him.
  • They do of course. The Heroes Take on Lord Francis’ unit with anger and zeal. Thought the battle is harsh and Basta takes a beating they prevail. Darrow unleashes a flurry of arrows directly at Lord Francis and they pass right through hhim. The Illusion that was once there shatters and dissipates and then they hear the screams of terror from the city behind them. They turn to seem Francis on the back of a great Skeletal Dragon as it destroys the ring strut on one of the airships docked at the tower and it crashes to the city, the flame elemental released and adding to the chaos. Francis jumps off the dragon and sends it to the heroes as he starts too slaughter the militia defending the wall of the city.
  • The Heroes finish off with the elite unti infront of them and Darrow shows why he is truely a Hunter as he downs the dragon reafirming the he is the master and it is but the beast.
  • The team loses site of Francis as theyy finish off the battle and rush to teh city. A flash of him appears as an image in tehir collective minds thanks to the rings they share….the only one left with a ring though is….Franklin.
  • The realization of the danger his ward is in Cid leads the charge up teh tower to the top, He burst forth into tehh smolding daylight to see Francis standing proudly waiting for him. bodys strewn about him and one final one writhing in desperation llocked in a deadly grip at the end of him outstreched arm. Franklin.
  • Cid orders him to let the boy go, venom, hatred, and anguish are mixed in his bellow. Francis simply laughs.
  • Darrow takes a shot at Francis and gets him in the arm. Francis tosses the boy at Cid, the team focuses on Franklin who is not breathing and has dark red and purple marks on his neck.
  • Scathe recovers first along with Basta and tells him to charge the bastard Francis.
  • Francis who is off balance still is knocked over the edge of the tower by Basta and falls screaming with hatered into the Lava moat below.
  • The Battle is won.
  • The focus goes back to Cid and in his arms Franklin, spells, salves, potions all have no effect, a tear falls from Cids cheek onto Franklin’s face and Cid’s amulet his mother left him starts to shimmer from an internal light.
  • The light flares so brightly that those who were there swear they could ‘hear’ it, when the light subsides Franklin’s eyes flutter open and he gasps weakly, “Whath everyone looking at. I thought I would die before I would get to thay that Bathta is thtill a thon of a bitch.” Then he passes into peaceful sleep.

Memorable lines:

  • “Basta push him off the f&$%^ng ledge before he gets a chance to monologue!” – Scathe to Basta when they meet Lord Francis on the Tower.

Chapter 22: House Keeping
*knock-knock "You want I fluff pillow???"

Characters: Scathe, Fayde, Basta
Game Date: 09/10/11
Karrnath; WinterHaven
Lharvion 21, 998YK

Plot Overview:

  • Takes place a few days before you leave on the mission for Elayne, and after the King has left.
  • With Cid, Darrow, and Ryden off on their own business Scathe, Fayde, and Basta found themselves enjoying some down time with Alex at the CAI. A new performance group had been passing through while the team was out of town and Alex used them to fill Fayde’s spot. Alex insisted they were good and that she wanted Fayde to hear them and be a guest for the night.

Fayde’s Night

  • The new Troupe were two members of Fayde’s old Troupe of performers. They played an incredibly powerful rendition of Ithani Lost which brings silence to the bar and makes Scathe’s moustache quiver.
  • Fayde goes to talk to them trying not to let on who he is. Goes well and they banter politely until Fayde finds out the Wesley (The gnome) lost his wife Pedigrew a couple years back to the Mourning. Fayde is crushed. Excuses himself and heads back to the table. Tosses back a HUGE drink so hard and so fast that even Alex was ready to catch him. He then falls into Scathe and starts balling like a child.
  • Scathe…having no clue what to do in this situation…simply pats him on the back awkwardly and starts spewing random clichés he has heard over the years in hopes that one would work.
  • Fayde smiles at the attempt of his friend and realizes the awkwardness he is in and thanks Scathe detaches and goes off to be on his own for a bit.
  • Later the next day when he has composed himself Fayde head’s back to visit Wesley and get more deatils of Pedigrew. He reveasl who he is and talks for a bit to try to get more information out of him about what they are doing.
  • Since Pedigrews Death times have been rought, and Wesley admits to Fayde that the troupe leader Moriner has fallen into….“occupations of questionable repute.” Wesley tries not to ask too many questions as he would rather not know most the time. He has been focusing on his performing. Even if its a front, he will do it as if it were not.
  • The most Fayde got on the job information from Wesley was that it had to do with a few targets in Winterhaven. That was all.
  • Fayde thanked Wesley. said he would see him again. And asked him not to tell the other two that he was here. He would approach them in his own time. Wesley agreed saying that Moriner has not mentioned him since the day they found him wandering the streets of a neighbouring town the night that Fayde was discovered and…left the group.

Scathe’s Night

  • Scathe, after being emotionally sneak attacked by Fayde needed to go blow off some steam. He decided to test some of the skills of the Porter’s Guild to see if there was any way he could improve them. While he respected Uncle Yari he felt that there was a definite problem with his Lieutenants and that it was better to find out now rather than later. Who better to do it than him.
  • Scathe hit one of Yari’s small warehouses about 1 bell. There were guards inside he was sure, and he spotted one when he got to the top of the wall to the fairly large courtyard. He made a rush for the building and managed to get in. He was ambushed by a guard on one of the upper balconys with bad aim on his cross bow.
  • Meanwhile a guard on the roof tossed his cloak over the chimney of the hearth and the room started to fill with smoke.
  • After a fairly clumsy battle on all sides one of the three guards made it away to call for help, the other two were over come and scathe managed to rescue them and still get his prize.
  • When he "returned it to Yari, the gnome expressed his…frustration both with his Lieutenants, ad Scathe and the whole situation.
  • After gold became involved a solution was found.
  • Scathe also got Yari to drop hints in his way…to get the Nobleman the King had left behind to OFFER the USELESS land outside the city that the old ruins were on to him his crew as the Land that was offered when they were Knighted.

Basta’s Morning

  • Basta spent the night looking through the library and the Scryign pool in the Mansion trying to figure more of the mysteries of this house and its original owner out.
  • The Nobleman left behind by the King requested the pressence of someone from the group, as Scathe was unavailable, Fayde was emotionally distraught, and Basta decided that he might as well do it.
  • Basta met up with the Liaison Noble that the King had left behind a few days to help Iron out all the changes that would both be occurring in WinterHaven and if there was anything needed to be done with or for the new Knights.
  • Basta and he talked very brief small talk and the Nobleman, who because he was a warforged and because he was not of noble blood was very curt and handed the deed of the land over to Basta with a sort of sneer…as if the Nobleman had just pulled a fast one over the silly old ’forged.

The Group Together

  • With the other three still off on their own, Fayde’s desire to not be alone, Basta’s desire to…be Basta, and Scathe’s desire not to see that happen the three stuck together that morning planning what to do with the Mansion now that it was theirs officially. They bring Ahziz to it as a show of faith to him of their trust in him and in their need for his import and export skills. Until they can share more with the others this needs to remain secure and having someone with Ahziz’s skills at getting products in and out of the city would come in handy.
  • They also invited Franklin to live with them. It would get him off the streets and give them the peace of mind that there was someone they could trust that would be there should someone come when the group was not.
  • In that Basta set up multiple wards in the areas of the House that were off limits to anyone without a ring. He demonstrated this to Franklin with a weasel from the bag of holding and ad timely release into the ward resulting in a “POAHI” noise and the smell of bbq in the air.
  • Basta also had an idea on the Statue near the lava flow room so, leaving Ahziz and Franklin to clean out the stables and get the mansion common rooms ready for use, he took Scathe and Fayde to investigate.
  • The statue of Kendran Cannith towers at the far end of the room when you enter. It is bathed in the warm glow of the lava and you marvel at the magic employed to not only keep the heat out of the room from the lava, but also the fact that the area the statue’s base sits on seems to float on the lava.
  • Basta touches the Statue and the words you found before flare up in a blue glow “Speak The Name and Enter The Treasure.” Basta looked back once at Fayde and Scathe and then turned back to the statue and says in the Arcane language used by the House “The Bull”
  • The words flash with the words of power used and a wall of magic grows from the floor to the top of the statue and forms a dome. Sigils and runes floats on the magic then, with the blue, fades away and the floor and statue start to sink into the lava.
  • The lava flows up along the border of the magical wall until it submerges the trio, then does the reverse from the bottom up into darkness. A soft thud is heard as the statue makes contact on a new floor and crystals on the wall light up to a very low soft glow revealing a small yet high room with stairs going down in the direction that the statue is looking.
  • The trio head cautiously down the stairs, a sunrod their only light. The stairs end in a massive room with columns (think the mines of Moria in LotR). There is a relkief of major events of the early days of Galifar and Karrn the Conquerer on the wall opposite the stairs and on the end of each room are large wodden doors with Massive statues of bulls with the head of the bull/gorgon that would become the Cannith Crest holding up their frames. Each of the columns are carved to look like creatures and races from all over Eberron, some are not recognizable.
  • Scathe tripped a trap and they have to defend themselves from two primitive bull holumcolus at the first door they got to.
  • They pass through the east doors after beating the guards and enter an enormous room with a huge door on the far end of it. The roof was built out of perfectly smooth stone. The room is totally empty

Memorable lines:

  • “Do you want me to kill him?”
“Whhhahaaaa? Why would I want that???”
“Sometimes this is how you solve problems…very effective…”
    – Scathe trying to console a sad, crying Fayde
  • “Everybody gets One…” Uncle Yari to Scathe when his item was returned.
  • “Thid thaid not to thwear…but he’th a Thon of a Bitch” – Franklin to Scathe (referring to Basta) after Basta demonstrated what would happen if he went into places he was told are out-of-bounds.

Chapter 20: The Forgotten Forge
What was lost will again be found...

Characters: Cid, Basta, Darrow, Fayde
Game Date: 25/09/11
Darguun; North Border of Mournland
Lharvion 25, 998YK

Plot Overview:

  • Lady Elayne Cannith arrives in WinterHaven looking for you specifically. She was impressed by your work in finding the lost schema & forge in the Cogs of Sharn and has a new job for you.
  • She wants you to travel to the border between Darguun and the Mournland to recover another lost Forge.
  • During her briefing with you detailing the job she tells you about the Forgotten Forge; This one was known only by House Cannith when the House was at it’s peak and since the hierarchy of Cannith was wiped out during the Mourning its where abouts (along with much of the House’s History and secrets have been hard to come by. In fact she found it herself and has come to you to find it.
  • She also expresses concern that there was a group sent by the King’s Lantern (The Breland secret service) to try to find and claim the forge to use as leverage over the House, that is just hearsay though and she can not prove it.
  • When asked why go outside the house she simply explains that you had done such a good job for her that it was a logical move. When Fayde and Cid press her further she admits that due to the inner turmoil within Cannith at the moment trust is something that is easier to be found with them than within.
  • She offers 500g up front to each of them. Any items they find that don’t appear to be specifically belonging to Cannith can be kept by the team and she is providing you with her Airship to get them to the area on the border that she has narrowed the search to.
  • She offers more money upon their return depending on what information and what else they find.
  • She also warns them that she MAY not be the first person to discover this forge and thanks to its proximity to the Mournland they should exercise extreme Caution.
  • The team arrives without incident, and after a little searching find an entrance into the forge they walk in and see that there has been some recent movement in the cave. Goblins make an attack
  • Leaving no survivors, Fayde grabs a set of armour from one of the hobgoblins and dons it shifting to look like its previous owner, the group moves quickly into the cave’s tunnels. In the tunnel leading into the complex Cid triggers a ward protecting the hall (TWICE) it does some big damage to the team and they trudge on more determined.
  • At the end of the tunnel a hole is smashed into a wall. Beyond is a room finely wrought of white stone with gray-green veins and flecks. A large arcane contraption of metal and stone stands in the center of the room, the veins in the room tie into it and flow up and around the object to a large purple crystal at it’s top.
  • Standing about the room are creatures like warforged. Some are incomplete or worn with time, while others have fared better with time. One appears to have a sheathe of flesh that has been cut or torn away in places, revealing inner workings of a warforged that are thinner than your standard model.
  • As the team enters the eyes of the constructs glow with the same purple as that of the crystal and they lurch to life.
  • The team takes a beating from the warforged. As soon as they disable one the machine seems to turn them back on again. Basta studies the machine in hopes of shutting it down. Darrow, taking a more direct approach, tries to shoot it to shut it down by force. After multiple psychic rebutals from the machine that left Darrow feeling LESS than perfect he runs up next to Basta and Fayde, who has gone to help leaving Cid to hold off the animated ’forged, lays his hands on the machine and closes his eyes and concentrates for a few moments and the machine shuts down, along with the forged it was controlling.
  • Basta, thanks to help from Fayde and Darrow, realizes that he can reprogram the machine to attack anyone else and not the team anymore.
  • They head up the north door and come to a room where they hear other goblins talking normally, unaware of the heroes outside.
  • Fayde takles on the role of his new face and casually walks into the room and uses the communication rings to relay the layout of the room and its inhabitants.
  • He lulls the Goblins into thinking that the adventurers have given up and then they burst into the room.
  • The battle in tight quarters goes fairly well for the team, until Fayde tosses a bedroll at a Goblin attacking Cid. The goblin ducks at JUST the right time and the bedroll hits Cid; Cid then thinks that Fayde is one of the other goblins and makes a couple attacks at him.
  • Near the end of the fight everyone is quite tired and Cid has lost all patience. They capture the last remaining Hobgoblin who surrenders and they interrogate him a bit.
  • While the others are questioning, Fayde searches the room and finds a locked trap door.
  • Cid asks the prisoner where the door leads, the goblin doesn’t know and replies as such. Cid hauls him to the door and asks again. Again gets the same reply.
  • Cid, uncharacteristically short tempered and almost angry grabs the goblin and picks him up and uses HIM to open the trap door. Killing him with a broken neck as his head hits the door open at an unnatural angle
  • The Heroes descend into the dark tunnel.

Memorable lines:

  • “Let’s find out then” Cid to the Hobgoblin prisoner while picking him and using its body as the lock pick
